Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) Sued for injuries in Explosion

A lawsuit was filed Monday on behalf of two injured tradesman as a result of the August 30, 2018 explosion at the Calumet Water Plant on 130th St. That explosion rocked the Far South Side Riverdale neighborhood and injured 10 workers as the roof collapsed on the single-story structure.

Among those injured in the blast were Willian Kissane and William Ruiz both Union Pipefitters in whose names the suit was filed. Attorney James J. Morici, Jr. a veteran Chicago trial lawyer with Morici, Figlioli & Associates, who is representing Kissane & Ruiz said, “ there was a failure by those in control of the worksite to adequately test and ventilate the building” that led to the blast.

Each of the workers was initially treated at local emergency rooms with Kissane being rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital after Chicago Firefighters were able to extricate him from under the collapse. “It was a miracle nobody was killed, and that greater harm wasn’t spread across the neighborhood”, according to Morici.

Plants like the one involved are governed by strict rules for safety. Included in those rules is the need for careful attention to atmospheric conditions within buildings and confined spaces. “This incident could have been prevented had adequate safety planning been undertaken. Things like monitoring, testing and ventilating the premises beforehand are required”, said Morici.
