Learn About Scott's Law

If you see flashing lights it means move over for police or emergency vehicles stopped along the roadway.

"Scott's Law," also known as the "Move over Law," requires approaching motorists to do the following when an emergency vehicle of police is stopped along the roadway:

  • Reduce the speed of your vehicle
  • Safely and cautiously change lanes
  • Proceed with safety and caution with traffic flow

This law has been in effect since January 1, 2002 and requires drivers to move over a lane if there is an emergency vehicle stopped with lights flashing. This includes firefighters, police officers and maintenance workers during the course of their duties. You can see emergency vehicles stopped along streets, highways, interstates and even shoulders – always move over when possible.
