In the last segment of this episode of Community Safety Forum, Chicago personal injury attorney, Jim Morici, and Chicago product safety expert Dan Pacheco discuss falling hazards around the home and ways to try and prevent from getting injured. A few simple things to do is to pick up loose throw rug and make sure extension and cable cords are out of any walk way. Staircases always present a falling hazard. They should have railings on both sides and should be clear of any debris or objects that can be tripped on. Another common household item that can cause many fall injuries is the use of ladders or step stools. A few tips Chicago safety expert Dan Pacheco suggests when using a ladder or step stool in the house are; the stool or ladder should be set on a flat level surface and the rungs of the ladder should be free of slippery material and your shoes should be clean as well. When climbing a ladder it should be set at the proper angle before climbing. You should always climb with three of your limbs on the ladder at all times; either two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand so you are stabilized at all times. The Chicago product safety expert also explains that you shouldn't try to over reach by leaning one way or the other and to always keep your belt buckle inside the rails of the ladder so you don't over reach and cause the ladder to tip or fall.
