Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment of Whiplash

How Does Whiplash Occur?

Whiplash most often results from rear-end car accidents. When a car is rear-ended, the force of the impact causes the body to jolt forward, resulting in an overly-invasive stretch to a ligament in the spine called the anterior longitudinal ligament. When this happens, the head is snapped back and the ligament is either over-stretched or torn, resulting in whiplash.

What are the Symptoms of Whiplash?

Whiplash victims often suffer from pain and aching in the neck and back, with the pain sometimes resonating down to the arms. Victims may also experience the sensation of “pins and needles” in their neck, back, and shoulders. Some people also report experiencing dizziness and blurred vision. These symptoms can be felt directly after an auto accident, but in many cases may be felt several days later after the shock from the accident has worn off.

How is Whiplash Diagnosed?

Whiplash injuries affect the soft tissue in the neck and back, potentially resulting in torn ligaments, discs, and muscles. These types of injuries can only be detected by medical testing such as MRIs and CT scans. In order to ensure our clients receive the care they need to recover from whiplash after a car accident, Morici, Longo & Associates works closely with many top-rated Chicago physicians at institutions like Loyola University, RUSH Medical Center, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

How is Whiplash Treated?

There is no one-size-fits-all treatment that helps a car accident victims recover from whiplash. Gentle pain relievers like over-the-counter Advil or Tylenol can help with the pain. Light physical therapy and exercises may also help. Heat, ice, and massage therapy can also be helpful. If the pain persists, other methods of treatment may include prescription medications, additional physical therapy, or, in rare cases, injections into the neck.
